Aboriginal Welcome Ceremony – the white bearded man is Steve Gadlabarti Goldsmith, an Elder. He told me to expect fruit bats flying off at sunset. If you come see us at the Novatech Stage on Monday you will see and hear them. They make an amazing sound!

This morning I took the tram to Glenelg Beach. Bright white sand, and the water was so refreshing after all that hot sun at the WOMADelaide Fest. It was a national holiday Monday, the Horseracing Cup, and all over people were wearing fancy hats! Seems to be the tradition!

We are invited to a Maori Powhiri Welcoming Ceremony.
What an experience!

We witnessed the Women singing Karanga, a Maori song of welcome. Then we were Greeted with Hongi, the ritual greeting of Pressing Of Noses. Young boys presented the Haka War Dance. Intense! An Oratory by our Elder Host, -spoken in the Maori language, answered by Singing, and a sharing of words and music from the various Womad Artists. Then a traditional meal was served!

We certainly feel Welcomed now.

These are carvings outside the Maori Community Meeting Place. We weren’t allowed to take photos inside…

After the wonderful Maori Welcoming Ceremony, where words, song and dance were shared, we were invited to a Maori Feast. uplifting singing ever present… What a joy. The food, meats with potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc were cooked with fire and hot stones underground. there was delicious marinated fish and mussles. The vegetarians had a nice spread with various chickpea and lentil curries, beets and root veg. YUM!

Happy World Sleep Day!
Fun fact: “Man is the only mammal that willingly delays sleep!”

Striking contrast – New Plymouth’s old White Hart Hotel and the town Clock Tower, and the Len Lye Centre
